Observations of and doings in the American West…

Oh, hey guys.

As some of you may know, I’m currently about two-thirds of the way through my little adventure around the U.S. I’ve been to Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Pennsylvania, Washington, Montana, Oregon and California and will soon make a stop in Texas (to say hey to Ms. Kerry Fitzpatrick) before heading home on Thanksgiving! I just thought I would give you a little update on the Western portion of my trip.

Seattle, WA was lovely as always. If you ever go there, take the Red Hook Brewery tour in Woodinville and/or the Theo Chocolates tour. Did any of you current Berwyn folk get to try the chocolate I sent Michelle? Delicious. I wouldn’t really suggest a stop in Pioneer Square…I almost stepped in vomit.

Montana is cold. Really fucking cold. I toured the University of Montana. I loved the school and their Resource Conservation Program, but seriously? Snow on October 5th? I don't feel great about that. However, Montana is one of the only places I’ve been in a long time that actually feels like it may have some “wilderness” left in it.

I drank a lot in Portland, OR. The city has a fantabulous bookstore. The Portland Museum of art is neat. I guess Oregon is kind of how I would imagine my own personal Heaven. I’m putting in a firm vote for a Berwyn II relocation to Oregon. I met some nice individuals who grew up on a commune/farm outside the city… think about it. I mean, ours doesn’t have to include that whole free-love thing or homeschooled children…unless you’re into that…I guess.

The entire state of California smells like weed. This is not an exaggeration. Ok, I can only definitively speak for Northern California, but that’s still impressive. I’m staying in the Napa area with my Aunt and Uncle, but I just saw Amy Dewan in San Francisco last week. We ate some delicious walnut pie. Amy is working on a sweet documentary. You should ask her about that sometime.

Thursday I’m headed to Los Angeles. I’ll probably meet a lot of rich and famous people who will naturally want to hang out with me and pay me a lot of money and solve my unemployment issue.

Anyways…

I miss you all! I can’t wait for a joyous reunion. I’ll see many of you in approximately 16 days.

;)

Free things are here

Hey guys!

I am still in sunny california. October is the best month to be here in San Francisco. It's actually sunny right now. I just got done with my farming stint, and have been in San Francisco for a few days. In the short time that I have been here though, I have already seen some amazing live music for free (Amadou&Miriam, Old Crow Medicine Show, Aimee Mann). AND  I may be going to a conference called Bioneers where Michael Pollan will be speaking. I will be sure to report back.

I miss you berwyn kids a lot, but I've been thinking about the possibility of settling up here in northern california, eventually. Berwyn would fit in well. I'm coming back though, in mid november for a little while. So maybe I won't move out here quite yet.

Anyway, I just wanted to update. My life has gotten a lot weirder, but it's all very exciting. I also want to hear about what everyone else is up to, so update your ish.

I MISS YOU GUYS!!!

Hello Berwyn,

I haven't been homesick, but I miss all of your faces. It's growing on me that I won't see so many of you for so long. I don't like it. I am having a blast and working all day everyday doing some pretty cool/interesting stuff (cadavers and cutting up stuff), but this is no Berwyn.

I appreciate so many folks trying to keep in touch. I love you guys so much.

I just got Skype as it keeps me entertained when I am at school for 14 hours at a time. So Skype me: My name is David Pearce. My skype name is davidtaylorpearce. It'll make my day. Like really, MAKE MY FUCKING DAY.

Happy birthdays to Steph and Mich. You guys are fucking old. XOXO

Hanna, safe travels and enjoy your vacation, you totes deserve it.

Everyone in school, good luck and don't forget to have fun. I have 20 hour days and am still having a blast, so you better as well or what's the point?

BTW I like how you guys are spreading rumors about me.

LOVE YOU,

-Pearcey-Poo

The chorus from ode to joy (Beethoven's 9th, 4th movement)

A wonderful choral from Beethoven's greatest symphony. It makes me thing of Berwyn. You should read it while listening to the piece, which can be found on youtube at:

BARITONE
Oh friends, not these tones!
Let us raise our voices in more
pleasing and more joyful sounds!

ODE TO JOY (Friedrich Schiller)

BARITONE, QUARTET, AND CHORUS
Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

May he who has had the fortune
To gain a true friend
And he who has won a noble wife
Join in our jubilation!

Yes, even if he calls but one soul
His own in all the world.
But he who has failed in this
Must steal away alone and in tears.

All the world's creatures
Draw joy from nature's breast;
Both the good and the evil
Follow her rose-strewn path.

She gave us kisses and wine
And a friend loyal unto death;
She gave lust for life to the lowliest,
And the Cherub stands before God.

TENOR SOLO AND CHORUS
Joyously, as his suns speed
Through Heaven's glorious order,
Hasten, Brothers, on your way,
Exulting as a knight in victory.

CHORUS

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Joy, beautiful spark of the gods,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter fire imbibed,
Heavenly, thy sanctuary.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.

Joy, daughter of Elysium
Thy magic reunites those
Whom stern custom has parted;
All men will become brothers
Under thy gentle wing.

Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.

Joy, beautiful spark of Gods!,
Daughter of Elysium,
Joy, beatiful spark of Gods!

Much Love,
Curtis

A Lovely Tour of My New Apartment, St. Kitts Style

Hey Everyone,

So I spent all of last night trying to put together a video of my apartment. I failed miserably and ended up with this 8 part series, which I could be happier with. Regardless, I had a lot of fun doing it until the first four attempts wouldn't upload. I like the video thing, if it ever works for me. So here is the tour if you will:

Much love to all of you.

Week 2: More Music and Some See Ya Latahhhhs

Dear Berwyn,

This is a combinatorial post regarding some departure and some music.

First and foremost, I love all of you guys. Leaving Berwyn, much less the US is going to be tough, but its never really a goodbye it's a see you later. Thanks so much for all of the love and such (the cell cake and beers were awesome!). Everyone is welcome to visit for my 15 month stint so hopefully see you all then! Not to beat a broken record, but I love all you cuties tons. I'll keep in touch more than welcome, post some tropical pictures, and be on gchat all time long whenever I am not super busy.

Secondly, I'll put up some more music and hopefully you guys will enjoy it!

Check out http://www.radiohead.com/deadairspace/ for Radiohead's new song "These are My Twisted Words."

Sufjan Stevens' Illinois is one of my favorite albums. It's just gorgeous. http://www.mediafire.com/?lvorj5p9ybn

There is also a new Deadmau5 album for those who enjoy techno/house/minimalism.

Last, but not least, El Michels Affair made this album called Enter the 37th Chamber. Its funk covers of Wu-Tang songs minus the lyrics.

Big sky country is a lone-star state,
but the reward of being away is
realizing how much you love the
people who have come to fill your
life. Even the trivial walk down
Berwyn seems something of a
pleasure in hindsight. All things
considered, Texas has been amazing.
Seeing family and focusing myself
has been a gift that I plan to use
wisely.

Best,
Curtis
